"Mamma Mia" 2008

“Mamma Mia”

I love ABBA. My son hates them.

When my son was in fifth grade they did a school program. It is the last year that all the kids are still in choir so they all have to participate. The teacher decided that they should do a disco style dance and chose “Dancing Queen” to be the song.

They practiced for weeks. “Dancing Queen” playing over and over and over. Ten years later I have to change the radio if it comes on. I can’t blame him. I feel the same way about “Kokomo” by the Beach Boys.

This movie has some great moments. I love Meryl Streep though she is a little old for the role. No offense Meryl! It is just that she can’t pull of someone who is supposed to be in her early forties.

I have seen the musical a couple of times. The first was when my husband and I went to Vegas. It plays all the time there. My husband and I have a deal when we go to Vegas. I have insisted that we go to some type of show while we are there. One year we didn’t and spent a lot of time in the casino and it wasn’t as much fun. I like an activity to look forward to.

So every time we go, we take turns picking out shows. One year I wanted to see Elton John while he was still playing Caesar’s Palace. But while I was searching for tickets I found that I could get really bad tickets for Elton or really good tickets for Harry Connick Jr. I picked Harry.

When my husband picks we end up at Carrot Top. It isn’t pretty. It is a guy thing I just don’t get.

But I can usually drag him to a good musical. I know he would never go to a play. But his love for music comes through with a musical. That orchestra gets going and he is tapping his feet along.

He actually went to see “Mamma Mia” on stage both times. But I couldn’t have dragged him to the movie.
The cast is great. I love Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan. But Pierce’s singing voice just sounds wrong coming out of James Bond. I don’t know what it is about him or the voice, but it is wrong.

It isn’t meant to be a deep movie. It is just fun. The supporting cast is good. The young actors are very pretty. What saves it? The soundtrack. Gotta love ABBA.
